It’s cheaper, more efficient and more humane to pay to stop a disaster than it is to pay to respond to a disaster. Still, we don’t do it.
Confronted with hardships few (if any) of us can imagine, the women in this video went to heroic lengths to save their own lives and the lives of their children.
There are plenty of videos, pictures and stories depicting the women in Dadaab as victims. I’m proud to have contributed to a video acknowledging their strength and courage.
My colleague, friend and toddler haberdasher Kate Crosby created the video with photos taken by Evelyn Hockstein. Niki Clark interviewed the women. I wrote the narration based on Niki’s notes.
