Do I have a Don Cornelius memory?

When I watched Soul Train as a kid there were frequent commercials for a hair relaxer called Afro Sheen. Afro Sheen’s tag line was “the no lye relaxer.” I had no idea what lye was, so I thought they were saying “no lie relaxer” as in “no lie. this stuff really works.” It wasn’t until I was in my 20s and I saw lye in a hardware store that I figured they meant lye.

Incidentally, I was well into my 30s when, peering into the freezer section at my grocery store, I finally realized “tater tots” was a pun meaning “little potatoes.”

So, no, I guess I don’t have a Don Cornelius memory to share.

You amateur veterinary theologians had better be correct about where dogs go. Sarah earned an eternity of unfettered couch access, ear scratches, gentle pats and easy-to-catch, plump squirrels.

She was a gentle soul who gave us nothing but kindness and comfort. I miss her, but I’m happy when I think of her and grateful to have had her by my side for 12 years.

Confronted with hardships few (if any) of us can imagine, the women in this video went to heroic lengths to save their own lives and the lives of their children.

There are plenty of videos, pictures and stories depicting the women in Dadaab as victims. I’m proud to have contributed to a video acknowledging their strength and courage.

My colleague, friend and toddler haberdasher Kate Crosby created the video with photos taken by Evelyn Hockstein. Niki Clark interviewed the women. I wrote the narration based on Niki’s notes.
