– Creative Loafing’s Scott Henry compares the Peachtree-Pine homeless shelter to other nearby shelters that are not nuisances to the communities in which they operate. A Fulton County Superior Court judge just evicted Peachtree-Pine’s operator. The United Way will take over operations of...

Don Cornelius
Do I have a Don Cornelius memory? When I watched Soul Train as a kid there were frequent commercials for a hair relaxer called Afro Sheen. Afro Sheen’s tag line was “the no lye relaxer.” I had no idea what lye was, so I thought they were saying “no lie relaxer” as in “no lie. this stuff really works.” It wasn’t until I was in my 20s and I saw lye...

Newt thinks he did well at Sunday's debate →
If Newt calling Barack Obama the food stamp president sounds like race-baiting to you, that’s because it’s supposed to. On January 6, Newt told a townhall meeting in New Hampshire “the African-American community should demand paychecks and not be satisfied with food stamps.” To the best of my knowledge, Newt has never asked non-blacks to denounce food assistance programs.

Newt's last stand →
The South Carolina primary on Saturday, January 21 (Democracy on a day most working people have off? How civilized!) could be Newt’s last stand. Newt keeps arguing that he’s a real Reagan Conservative (in South Carolina, this is a good thing) and that front-runner Romney is a moderate who supports women’s reproductive rights (in South Carolina, this is a bad thing).

101 Reasons Why You're Not David Bowie and He Is,...
David uses his spare time For dreaming up new styles He never spends Whit Monday In the bathroom, grouting tiles David’s early efforts Often dwelt on alienation He never noted Diesels Or hung out on Reading station David shaved both eyebrows And the net effect was arty He never had just one done While unconscious at a party David in his sixth decade Still has a head of hair...

Atlanta's 2011 Milestones: Health & Security
Who said there’s no such thing as a silver bullet? Earlier this year, Georgia’s visionary political leaders did what seasoned political observers considered impossible - they solved two of the state’s most urgent chronic problems with the passage of a single law. HB 87 didn’t simply secure Georgia’s porous border with Mexico, it helped the estimated 6 million state...

WCA Ep. 21 - Give v Receive →
Audio of my Write Club performance from last week. Note to all: My reading contains occasional foul language, harsh criticism of several passages of the Old Testament, and an irreverent (but ultimately supportive) reading of part of the New Testament. If that sort of thing bugs you, then this will bug you
